HILLSBORO BIKING

About Us

We are a group of riders that enjoy inspiring others to join along no matter what level you find yourself biking at, start where you are and “Get Up, Get Out and“Get Going”!

Hillsboro Biking started back in 2002 when Bud Harris started a project in his neighborhood, the Jackson School neighborhood, (a home owners association) called “Take Back Our Forest.”At the time, vandalism and vagrancy was high in the Jackson School nature preserve where many, many nice trails intertwine private property with Hamby City Park property. The main problem was that nobody would use the forest trails because of precarious behaviour and truant teens and sometimes transient adults lurking in the forest.

The straw that broke the camel’s back was in 2001 shortly after 911. Bud was on a mountain bike ride in the forest when he turned a corner and two teens in black camo gear with black ski masks were pointing what looked like to be an M-16 automatic rifle at him. It turned out to be a paint ball gun. That was it! They had committed 3 strikes right there. In addition to trespassing on neighborhood private property, using any type of firearm is prohibited in Hillsboro city limits and they were leaving paint balls and paint all over the ground and tree bark. :-(   He decided that moment enough was enough and started rallying support to Take Back Our Forest!

His movement brought out over 60 neighbors to move logs, trim brush, remove trash, and more importantly, to get folks to promise to frequent and use the beautiful park like forest reserve.  To this day, both the homeowners association and SOLV perform an annual clean-up. Bark mulch is provided by the city and trails are groomed, ivy is cut back, trail brush is kept under control and one can see families taking their children and dogs to explore the beautiful resource of the nature preserve.

In 2003, Bud Harris,an avid mountain biker and runner, who coaches the City of Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Kids Cross Country running programs, looked around and noted that no one was teaching basic mountain biking and recreational trail riding workshops. Gaining approval from Jackson School Homeowners Association and Parks & Rec,  Bud started to develop courses for kids, inactive adults and has now developed three programs and Ready Riders Rock is his forth.
