Ready Riders Rock!
10 – 18 years old

Ready Riders Rock! (R3) is a youth MTN Biking Program that takes on a scouting like feel with its many topics related to fitness, the stewardship of ones bike and the trails and environment the course takes place on.

Check out what Dr. Bud has to say about this one of a kind program, click here! And if you do not believe Dr. Bud, check out what the kids are saying, click here!

Through the generosity of an REI grant, Hillsboro Parks & Rec was able to purchase 10 new Novara disk brake mountain bikes. So, if you don’t have a bike, we have one for you to use in class! Besides learning bicycling techniques, you’ll also learn how to take care of your bike. There are simple things you can do to keep your bike in better condition. We’ll conclude the class with a trip to the new Stub Stewart State Park bike trails. Dr. Bud Harris, avid bicyclist

It is the intention and expectation of the R3 graduates that they become role models and mentors to their peers, family and neighbors by modeling healthy living, safe riding and helmet use. Dr. Bud, an Eagle Boy Scout, envisioned creating such a program in 2000. The R3 pilot started in the winter of 2008 and will sessions in May 2008 and August 2008.

The first few rides take place at the Hillsboro stadium on their cross country bike/walking/running trails that circle the gigantic property. The day of the final class, the R3 riders and their bikes are transported to Stub Stewart State Park just 20 minutes to the west where all of the skills, knowledge and practice is pulled together on a challenging but safe trail ride. Family is invited to join the R3 riders to possibly picnic at the beautiful Hilltop day use area overlooking the Oregon costal mountain range.

Biking skills covered include: positioning and balancing, shifting, braking, cornering, descending, climbing, and log-hopping. Basic bike maintenance and bike safety checks are done each day and proper helmet fitting is part of class work and homework. The International Mountain Bikers Association (IMBA) and Tread Lightly trail ettiquette is taught. Learning to stretch and fuel with the right foods is touched upon but the bulk of the time is spent learning the skills of mountain biking and the MTN Bike Triad – learning how and when to use: the bikes momentum (speed of the bike), leverage (bike gears) and force (the riders leg strength).  Download flyer here
